All the cars built within the last 10 years seem to look much the same: quite boring except for the classier vehicles. They all seem to need a computer expert to fix them, costing a packet. This is why I would like a classy looking older car, which has more style. I have a budget of about £1,800 and want buy a Mercedes, possibly the C180, C200, or 190 round about 1994 – 1998. I have read your reviews and seen loads of other reports. I’m now totally confused as to which model to look out for. It needs to do 30 mpg as my drive to work each day is 32 miles return. I’m looking for about 5 years worth of reasonable motoring, not too many repair costs and service expenses. I can do some work myself: replace accessible parts or oil change etc.

The best were the older 190E 2.6 and W124 260E up to J reg when they started fitting them with catalytic converters. A 190E 2.6 auto will just about do 30mpg. My dad's did, and he ran that from 20,000 miles to 360,000 miles. Avoid the first C Class. They have the sort of ECU problem you want to avoid.
