Nervous brakedown
I own a 2005/55 VW GTI with 22,428 miles on the clock. At 21,500 miles the ESP light came on. I called my local ex VAG service technician to undertake a diagnostics check, which confirmed the ABS unit was at fault. So, I took the vehicle to a local Manchester VW dealership for another diagnostics check and wrote to customer care at Milton Keynes. On the 18th and 23rd Dec 2009 a VW case worker called. VW required all service records with genuine VW parts used to be listed. All relevant information was sent to the VW case worker at VW Passenger Cars, Selectapost, Sheffield. On 12th January 2010 the caseworker contacted me to inform me that VW was not prepared to offer me any goodwill because the car had been purchased from a independent dealer, it had not been serviced at a VW dealership, and it had not been serviced in the last 12 months. My reply was that the car has only done 8,117 miles since its last service (at 14,311 miles on the 8th May 2008). Also the ABS unit is becoming a common fault within VAG. The reply was, VW might offer 10% towards a replacement unit if the vehicle has the 24,000 mile service undertaken at a VW dealership. After some haggling I managed to get a 30% discount off the unit and agreed to the 24,000 mile service. Cost of replacement ABS unit was quoted at £1,067. Deduct the 30% and the unit comes to £746. The service cost is £128.

Many thanks. That's pretty much a standard scenario in the circumstances. It's a fight. I might get down to the auctions today to see how this issue is affecting the prices of used Golfs. If I was still dealing I wouldn't touch one unless I could get it £1,500 below trade book, or unless trade book drops £1,500. It seems that potentially faulty Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP units stopped being fitted at some time in 2007.
