Something in particulate
Just recently (in this cold weather) I have had great difficulty starting my Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI. When it eventually has started a cloud of back particulates belches out of the exhaust. I have normally used Shell Extra fuel but recently I filled up with ordinary BP. I have tried putting Miller's additive in the tank to no avail. Do the injectors narrow in cold weather? or are they temperature sensitive? Or is there another possible reason?

No. The fuel waxes. Anti waxing agents are added in winter, but not enough for the very cold temperatures we experienced.
