My daughter has asked me to advise her on the selection of a new car. She is not a car owner so has no vehicle to trade in. She has 4 children aged 11 to 19, husband no longer around. She needs a 5-seater with good luggage space for taking the older one to University, the 11-year-old and his pals to football with all their gear, and the whole family camping in the summer. She lives in a busy suburb of Bristol, cars parked along both sides of the street, and no garage, so parking is a bit tight. I have an old Ford Escort and she has used that on several occasions quite satisfactorily. She can probably pay cash for the deal, but a low interest hire purchase scheme would appeal. What would you advise?

A Citroen Xsara Picasso is ideal because it has 5 separate seats and plenty of luggage capacity. From £1,000 used to £10,000 new. Plenty of choice. If she does low miles, petrol is best.
