I'm looking to replace my beloved Fiesta 1.6TDCI Zetec S and want something with the same sort of performance - either diesel or petrol. Now retired, I drive about 5,000 miles a year, and enjoy fast but safe motoring in a small but comfortable car. Must be small as my garage is small. The new Fiesta is too wide. Reliability is also very important as I do most of my driving whilst on my own. I've been looking at the Alfa MiTo and test-drove a 1.6 Lusso diesel that I loved, but I've been deterred by some worries about electrical reliability. I also tested a VW Polo 1.6 SE diesel which felt sluggish and dull - the dealer told me there aren't any diesel SELs available at the moment. Price isn't a problem but, as a supposedly sensible grandmother, I don't want a Mazda MX-5 (although my partner would like me to buy one), a Porsche or indeed any boy-racer car that would make me look like ridiculous. Boot size isn't particularly important, and I tend to prefer 3-door models as I rarely have passengers in the rear seat. I should add that I'm only 5' 2" tall and am slightly built, so an easily adjustable driving position is vital. One local dealer seemed keen to sell me a car that he stressed was well supplied with cup-holders, so he (and it) were immediately struck off my list.

For 5k miles a year you definitely don't need a diesel with a particulate filter because it won't regenerate properly. Maybe a Mazda 2 1.3TS2. They are huge fun. Maybe a 2009 model Suzuki Swift 1.5GLX. Brilliant handling. Better than a MINI Cooper. Maybe an Abarth 500 (if you can get one), preferably on standard 16" wheels. Don’t be tempted by the £175 offer of 17" wheel upgrades.
