Pain in Spain
On 15 August you published a letter from "DW" about registering his car in Ibiza. We too have brought our car over (to Mallorca) and I would very much like to know whether your correspondent resolved the issue. Obviously you cannot give me his email address but would it be possible for you to forward this email to him in the hope that he will write to me direct? (It is impossible to find a straight answer about the requirements for registering a foreign car in Spain. The websites that I have checked give contradictory information and so do the people I have talked to in Mallorca. We want to do things correctly but obviously we don't want to incur charges before this is necessary - at present we have UK road tax, a year's MOT and we have insurance.)

The man who may be able to help you is Brian Deller at: www.spainvia.com . My understanding is that a foreigner cannot register a car to an address in Spain unless he is resident there for tax purposes on all his worldwide income. That new rule came into force in January 2009. Obviously if you live in Spain or have a property in Spain you will have an ‘assessor’ who can help you with the necessary paperwork to become a tax resident and register a car.
