I have two questions about my 2004 Volvo V70 D5 with 22,000 miles. For the last few years there has been a rattle when the clutch is dipped down. The rattle stops when it’s up. It rattles some days more noisily than other days. What could it be? The clutch feels fine. Also it’s a D5 engine. When it starts in the morning it has blue smoke coming out, then it clears all day, then it does take a few times to start in the cold. It had new glows plug, but no change in starting at all.

The rattle might be the dual mass flywheel starting to fail. The blue smoke might be because you are not allowing the glowplugs to heat up before you engage the starter. Give them 30 seconds and you might not have further problems. If you do, then either one or more of the injectors are starting to fail or the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is blocked.
