Collapsed bearing cage

I wonder if you know why the bearing cage on a well maintained, regularly professionally serviced, Peugeot 206CC might suffer this catastrophic event on a motorway after less than 17000 miles.

My car is one of those Peugeots that has had power failure/surges in the past.

Wheel bearings can fail at any time on anything. They always have.
