What car would double as a first car for a teenager and a second family runabout?

Please could you advise on a car that would be cheap to insure for a 19-year-old as a first car and that would also double as a second family runaround. It would be helpful to have a reasonable boot for shopping and dogs etc. Ideally, we would be looking to buy a car that is less than three years old or to lease.

A Honda Jazz might be a good choice - it's very versatile but might not be trendy enough for a 19-year-old, if that's important! Alternatively, a SEAT Ibiza or Ford Fiesta would be a good first car, but they're not hugely practical for carrying dogs (depending on how big they are...). You might need to look a size bigger... things like a Honda Civic or Volkswagen Golf, but they won't be that cheap to insure.
