Snow Chains for Audi A6 Avant 2002

Can I fit snow chains to an Audi A6 Avant (Sport) 2002?

Tyre size 215/55R16, Rims 7J.

My manual says I can, but Audi Customer Services say I cannot.

I have spoken to Thule who say I can and Rud who say I cannot.

Audi refuse to let me speak to a technical person in Audi (Do they have any?) and respond to a question submitted through a service centre ... Audi do not have any chains to fit my tyre. The answer does nt address the question with a simple simple "yes you can" or "no you cann't" but rather says they have not got one that fits.

When I called Audi in Milton Keynes they hung up on me as I was not a service centre calling (great customer service for such a marque) - they cannot talk to the general public, and nobody in the Customer Services appears to know what they are talking about (one person recommended fitting larger tyres onto my rims - 225/55 R16. By doing this it would make the clearance issues between the wall/edge of my tyre and the suspension arm.

How can they give such "advice"?

As the consequences of fitting chains to the car when they should not are at worst potentially life threatening and at best very expensive if they wrap themselves around the axel, I am VERY frustrated at the ineptness of Audi technical response and that I am not getting a consistant answer from Audi Thule and Rud and which I have faith in to be correct.

Can you help....?

Audi's reluctance to help might be because snowchains will scratch and damage the allow rims. Steel wheels are much better for winter conditions. That's why almost every car in Austria and Germany is on steels for the winter.
