Saab 93S 1998 bulkhead split
I bought this Saab from an independent Saab specialist two and a half years ago. Recently there was some knocking on manoevring and on examination I am told that the bulkhead is so badly split that it is beyond repair. The garage have said that the only possibility is to replace the bulkhead at a cost of £3,000. Apparently the Saab repair kit cannot be used, because the cracking has gone too far. The car has done 69,000 miles. Our previous car was a Saab 900 turbo which we reluctantly replaced as the repairs were becoming too costly (we are both in our mid-seventies). Is there any point in us approaching Saab on the basis of this being being a design fault, or is the car too old?

No. The car is 12 years old. Manufacturer responsibility comes to an end after 6 years. And VOSA always refused to issue a vehicle safety recall over this defect, despite my prompting. It also affected the Vauxhall Cavalier on which this SAAB 9-3 is based, the previous Cavalier based SAAB 900 and the Daewoo Espero. But if you have been having the car looked after by a SAAB 'specialist' he must have known about the problem and should have warned you to apply the repair kit earlier. I think he has some responsibility in the matter.
