EGR valve failure

I have 2007 Audi A4 Quattro. The EGR valve failed after 28705 miles. This was 4 months past the 3 yr warranty. Audi claim this is fair wear and tear. I believe this part should last considerably longer. Do you have any information on how long this part should last? I am no 'racer' so will how I drive have a big impact?

It is more likely to have clogged than to have failed and the reason for this will be the type of use the car was put to combined withy the fuel it was run on.
