Our car has been written off as a Cat N - what happens with the current insurance policy?
My son was involved in an accident and his car declared a total loss. An engineer inspected the car and classed it as Cat N ( the damage is door and panel so no structure at all). He is keen to buy back the car and the figures are good. How do we stand with the current policy? When would this end as he hasn't been advised not to drive the car, indeed the insurers have advised him he is fine to carry on driving at the moment.

If the vehicle is a total loss, then the insurer may want full payment for the policy. At that point, the policy has been concluded and you may need to start a fresh one.The first question is to check if the car is "beyond economical repair" or not. It may very well not be a total loss. Ask your insurer for a full copy of their Audatex engineers report. If the repair cost are less than the market value, the vehicle is not a total loss, request a cash in lieu settlement at the full cost of repair. The vehicle then has no categorisation attached, you get paid out, and the policy continues to run.
If it is a total loss, then you will need to pay what is remaining.
