Alfa Romeo Stelvio Review 2024
Alfa Romeo Stelvio At A Glance
Insurance Groups are between 29–50
On average it achieves 78% of the official MPG figure
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a premium SUV with a bit more flair than its conservative German rivals. Glamorous Italian styling means it really stands out when compared with other premium SUVs, and thanks to underpinnings shared with the sprightly Giulia saloon, it’s also enjoyable and comfortable to drive. Yes, the interior trails many rivals for outright quality, but it still feels like a classy product and plenty of creature comforts are included. Again, it’s not as roomy as some rivals, but it should be plenty practical enough for most families. A good all-rounder that’ll appeal to those looking for an SUV with a difference. Read on for our full review of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
SUV buyers are a fashion-conscious lot, so it’s a wonder there aren’t more cars like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. You see, however fashionable they are, most SUVs of this size and type - cars like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, and Volvo XC60 - couldn’t look more conservative if they were wearing a blue rosette and a Boris wig.
Next to these rivals, the flamboyantly styled Stelvio stands out like Cindy Crawford at the Tory Party Conference.
Under the skin, a lot is shared with the Giulia saloon. That includes its range of strong 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, and an eight-speed automatic transmission that comes as standard on all versions. All-wheel drive is optional on lower powered versions and standard towards the top of the range.
Sitting at the very top of that range is the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, an SUV that’s capable of dusting it with most supercars thanks to a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 with a truly monstrous 510 horsepower.
On the road, all versions of the Stelvio have impressive handling, especially for an SUV. There’s very little body roll, strong grip and quick steering, so quick in fact that it takes some getting used to.
Despite this ability in the corners, the Stelvio also manages to ride pretty smoothly, keeping you comfortable over all but the very roughest of roads. The only fly in the ointment is the fly-by-wire braking system that lacks feedback through the pedal.
On the inside, you’ll notice typical Alfa features such as deeply-recessed instrument dials and a starter button on the steering wheel. For the most part, quality is pretty good, but compared with the impeccable standards of rivals from Audi, BMW or Mercedes, it’s still a little way behind.
That said, practicality is all you’ll ever need it to be. There’s a decent amount of leg- and headroom in each of the five seats, so adults and lanky teens will be able to get comfy, and you’ll have plenty of space for bulky child seats. The boot’s a good size, too, and the load area is wide and flat.
However, if you’re really looking to maximise family-friendliness, the Audi Q5 is even better, with more passenger space and a bigger boot.
All in all, the Stelvio is a good all-rounder, doing a thoroughly decent job in all areas and a really good job in some of them. If you like the flamboyant styling, and you enjoy your driving, it’s definitely worth considering.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio handling and engines
- Engines range from 2.0 T 200 4WD to 2.9 BiTurbo 520 Quadrifoglio

Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Handling and ride quality
Through bends, the Stelvio has impressive body control for such a tall vehicle, with little in the way of roll even when pushing on hard or changing direction suddenly. And despite its cornering ability, it’s fairly comfy over lumps and bumps, particularly if you avoid the larger wheel options.
It’s not perfect, though. The fast steering feels sporty, but it’s unusual in an SUV and takes a bit of getting used to. The brakes are also odd; the pedal uses a 'fly-by-wire' system with no direct connection to the hydraulics, so they don’t provide much feedback.
Bear in mind, though, that this is an SUV and not an off-roader. If you want to venture off the beaten track, the all-wheel drive and hill-descent control will help to an extent but you’ll be much better off with a Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Engines
The engine range is straightforward, with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel. The petrol has 280PS, while the diesel engine provides 210PS. Every Stelvio comes with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Both engines are smooth, refined and punchy, with plenty of power in the mid-range thanks to turbocharging.
You shouldn’t have any trouble with slip roads or overtaking, while motorway cruising is subdued and relaxed. The diesel is the pick for high-mileage drivers.
The range-topper is an entirely different proposition altogether, mind. Known as the Quadrifoglio, it has a monstrous twin-turbocharged V6 giving 510PS, and this means seriously rapid, supercar-scaring performance.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Safety
The Stelvio has been crash-tested by the experts at Euro NCAP, and has achieved the full five-star rating. Much of that impressive result is down to the amount of standard safety kit the car comes with, which is plentiful, and is the same no matter which version of the Stelvio you pick.
Automatic emergency city braking with pedestrian detection is provided across the board, as are several airbags and a lane departure warning system. If you add the optional Driver Assistance Plus Pack, you get a few more clever safety measures on top, including blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control system that will pretty much drive the car for you in traffic.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Towing
The fact that the Stelvio is one of the lightest cars in its class is great news for its agility and efficiency, but it’s less of a boon for those who tow. Still, the official figures aren’t too bad. All Stelvios will pull an unbraked trailer up to 750kg.
The petrol model can lug a braked trailer with a weight up to 1600kg, while the diesel models are more flexible with a max braked towing limit of 2300kg.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Practicality
You shouldn’t feel short of space when sitting in the Stelvio, whether you’re occupying the front of the car or the back. Both rows have decent leg-and headroom, if neither is quite as generous as in some rivals.
The boot capacity is 525 litres, which is a little way behind rivals such as the Audi Q5, but it’s still plenty for pushchairs, shopping trips, suitcases or anything else you’d expect to fit in a family car.
You can also fold the back seats down to carry those bulky objects like furniture flatpacks, and because the rear seatback is split into 40/20/40 portions, you can do this in a variety of different ways for extra versatility. There’s no step between the seatback and the boot floor, either, although the former does lie at a slight angle.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Quality and finish
The quality of the materials on show is generally pretty good, with squidgy surfaces in most of the right places and nice touches like real, open-grain wood inlays.
That said, it’s not perfect. A few of the other surfaces - like the plastic surrounding the rotary infotainment controller - don’t feel as premium as the rest, while the centre console flexes a little bit when you rest your knee against it. For those reasons, it’s still a little way behind the impeccable quality you find in rivals from Audi, BMW and Mercedes, but it still feels like a high-end environment.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Infotainment
All versions get the same 8.8-inch screen to take care of the various infotainment functions. Like most rivals, it has touch-screen functionality, but you can also scroll through the on-screen menus using a dial controller found on the partition between the two front seats. This method is much easier to use on the move because it’s less distracting. The user interface is logically arranged and intuitive to operate, too, but if you crave the familiarity of your smartphone’s operating system, Apple Carplay and Android Auto are both standard.
All cars also get a 12.3-inch digital screen in the instrument cluster, which can be configured to display the information you’d like to see, such as sat-nav instructions of driving data.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio value for money
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Prices
It feels faintly odd to call a £47,355 car the cheapest in a range, but that’s exactly what the Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.2 Sprint with the turbodiesel engine is. Choose the 280PS version in this trim and you’ll pay £49,740.
Head up a notch to the Veloce trim and the diesel costs £51,855, while the petrol is listed at £54,240 at the time of wring. Top spec Competizione models go from £56,355 for the diesel and £58,740 for the petrol.
As something of a standalone model, the ferociously fast Quadrofoglio version of the Stelvio that has a 510PS twin-turbo 2.9 litre V6 engine will set you back just shy of £80,000 before adding any options. That’s a lot of money for a mid-size SUV.
Bear in mind that German rivals are likely to hold onto their value more resiliently over a fixed ownership period, meaning you’ll lose less money in depreciation during your tenure.
As a result, it’s entirely possible that the Audi or BMW could actually end up costing you less long-term, despite being pricier to buy in the first place. And, if you plan to buy on finance, the heavier depreciation will mean that monthly repayments will be that much higher.
However, while the comparatively shaky resale values aren’t great news if you’re considering the Stelvio as a new car, they’ll be music to the ears of used car buyers, who will likely pay significantly less for a Stelvio than they will for a Q5 or X3. And with the Stelvio having been around since 2017, finding a used example shouldn’t be too much of a struggle.
If you’re considering the Stelvio as a company car, the company car tax groupings of the various models look to be reasonably similar to those of the equivalent Audi or BMW. That means there won’t be much of a saving to be made here, but the lower purchase price will allow you to claw back a little bit.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2024: Running Costs
The Stelvio’s official WLTP fuel consumption figures are on a par with its key rivals. In the diesel, you can get an official figure of 46.3mpg, while the 2.0 litre petrol records 33.2mpg. Go for the Quadrifoglio and you won't be shocked to learn its 510PS returns 23.9mpg.
Insurance groupings for the most modest versions start in the low twenties, while the more powerful variants of the regular car get up to around the mid thirties, so while premiums won’t exactly be a snip, they won’t be ruinously expensive, either.
It’ll be a very different story if you’ve got your eye on the Quadrifoglio versions, though. It’s meat-head engine puts it in group 50 for insurance, which is the priciest bracket there is.

To be honest, we can’t see much missing from the kit list of the entry-level Stelvio, known as the Sprint. It comes with goodies including 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather seats, a powered tailgate, cruise control, parking sensors at either end and an infotainment system that brings together DAB radio, sat-nav and a reversing camera. It also has a 12.3-inch digital dash display included.
However, we could understand if you wanted to upgrade to the Veloce version, which brings active cruise control, as well as heated leather covers for the seats and steering wheel, and electric front seat adjustment. This is the one we think provides the best balance between kit and cost.
TheCompetizione adds 21-inch wheels, red brake calipers, and Synaptic Dynamic Suspension Control, which is a long-winded way of saying different driving modes. There's also rear privacy glass, a Harman Kardon stereo, and more leather on the dash, doors and centre armrest.
The Quadrifoglio adds all sorts of other performance-enhancing kit on top of its meat-head engine.

Alfa unveiled the Stelvio SUV
Launched under the name Stelvio, it is the brand's first SUV in over a century of history. The Stelvio's proportions are a length of 468 cm, height of 165 cm and width of 216 cm.
The same sporting inspiration makes another appearance in the Stelvio SUV's clean, uncluttered, interior, which is totally driver-centric, as you can see from the grouping of all the controls on the small, direct steering wheel, designed to suit all driving styles. The driver's position has been forged around the driver, with a diagonal tunnel and slightly undulating dashboard; and it has been "tailored" like a bespoke suit, with painstaking craftsmanship and premium materials: the carbon fibre, wood and fabrics have all been chosen for their visual and tactile appeal and assembled to give a palpable sense of human artistry.
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio mounts a unique power plant in terms of both technology and performance: a 510PS 2.9-litre V6 BiTurbo petrol with 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission is specifically calibrated to make gear changes in just 150 milliseconds in Race mode. The transmission also features a lock-up clutch to give the driver a powerful feeling of in-gear acceleration once the gear is engaged.
Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the other engines in the Stelvio range will include the 2.0-litre Turbo petrol with 8-speed automatic transmission. This is an all-aluminium 4-cylinder unit that puts out 280PS at 5250 rpm and maximum torque of 400Nm at 2,250rpm.
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is also equipped with the new Alfa DNA Pro selector, which modifies the car's dynamic response according to which mode the driver selects: Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficiency (energy-saving mode) and Race (ideal for maximum performance).
Combined with Q4 all-wheel drive for the first time, Alfa Romeo's Torque Vectoring technology optimises the Stelvio Quadrifoglio's drive distribution and accentuates its sporting character. The two clutches in the rear differential make it possible to control torque delivery to each wheel separately. So power is transferred to the ground more effectively, even when you drive the car to its dynamic limits. This makes the Stelvio safe and fun to drive at all times, without recourse to intrusive inputs from the stability control system.
July 2017
Stelvio prices announced
Starts from £33,990 OTR and launches with the Milano Edizione.
Four trim levels will be available from September 2017 including Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Super, Speciale and the limited production Milano Edizione. At launch, drivers will be able to choose between two engine versions – 2.2-litre 210PS diesel Q4 AWD and 2.0-litre 280PS petrol Q4 AWD – combined with an ZF eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.
The 2.0-litre 280hp petrol Q4 AWD accelerates from zero to 62mph in just 5.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 143mph, while returning 40.4mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 161g/km CO 2 .
The 2.2-litre 210PS diesel Q4 AWD meanwhile, gives out 127g/km CO 2 and returns 58.9mpg on the combined cycle, while still registering a top speed of 134mph and accelerating from zero to 62mph in 6.6 seconds.
From September the Alfa Romeo Stelvio will also be available to order with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, producing 180PS and available in both Q4 all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive, and a 2.0-litre petrol engine, with 200PS and Q4 all-wheel-drive.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio revealed
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is equipped with the exclusive aluminium 2.9-litre V6 Bi-Turbo petrol engine, developed with inputs and engineering know-how from Ferrari technologies.
It delivers maximum power of 510PS at 6,500rpm and generates a maximum torque of 600Nm from 2,500 to 5000rpm and is teamed with the specifically calibrated eight-speed automatic transmission, that shifts gear in just 150milliseconds in Race mode. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio can accelerate from zero to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, and on to a best-in-class top speed of 176mph.
For the first time, the 510hp 2.9 V6 Bi-Turbo petrol engine is combined with the innovative Q4 all-wheel drive system, which offers a potent combination of unbeatable performance, traction, driving pleasure and safety in all situations. In normal conditions, the Q4 system transfers 100 percent of the torque to the rear axle. As the wheels approach their grip limit, the system transmits up to 50 percent of the torque to the front axle in real time, by means of a transfer case.
Alfa Active Suspension controls the suspensions and shock absorbers continuously to reduce movement of the body of the car in all driving conditions. It constantly interacts with the CDC and Alfa DNA Pro and calibrates its actions to suit the driving mode selected, delivering unrivalled comfort and handling. Priced from £69,500 OTR.

October 2019
Stelvio Nero Edizione launched

Gloss black window surrounds and roof bars, dark tinted rear windows and xenon headlamps, with adaptive front lights and headlight washers, help distinguish these special editions. The new gear stick is now leather clad while the rotary knob that controls the infotainment system has been updated. The leather steering wheel has also been restyled to accommodate the functions and sensors for the autonomous driving systems.
The new MY2020 Stelvio marks the debut of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that enable the vehicles to deliver the highest level of autonomous driving currently legal. Level 2 autonomy is achieved when the driver can leave the car to control the accelerator, brake and steering in specific conditions, via electronic systems that require continual monitoring by the driver, but support them to offer greater comfort on long journeys. In all cases, the driver must be constantly vigilant and always keep his hands on the steering wheel.
The main enabling technologies present on the MY2020 include:
- Lane keeping assist: detects if the vehicle is drifting out of its lane without activation of the indicator and alerts the driver visually and by touch. It actively intervenes to return the vehicle to its lane.
- Active blind spot: monitors the rear blind spots to flag up any approaching vehicles and corrects the steering to avoid a collision if necessary.
- Active cruise control: automatically regulates the vehicle's speed to keep it a safe distance from the vehicles ahead. In cooperation with the road sign recognition system, it allows the speed to be automatically regulated as the speed limits change. The system uses the on-board camera to recognises the road signs and shows them on the display, alerting the driver to the current speed limit. It then advises the driver to adjust the speed to that read by the system, and if the driver agrees, the cruise control will be automatically set to the new speed limits.
- Traffic jam assistant and highway assist: In addition to the Active Cruise Control, these systems also supervise lateral steering. Traffic Jam Assistant keeps the car in the middle of the lane in heavy traffic and Highway Assist regulates the speed on the basis of the current motorway speed limits.
- Driver attention assist: monitors the driver for drowsiness and alerts them if necessary.
The new Stelvio range has been updated to include rear parking camera, bi-xenon headlights and electrically folding wing mirrors as standard, across the entire range as well as the new infotainment system with 8.8-inch touch-screen and embedded connectivity. From launch, Active Cruise Control, Traffic sign recognition with intelligent speed advisor and Traffic Jam & highway assist, as well as Autonomous Emergency Brake, Lane Departure Warning, Cruise Control and rear parking sensors.
