SEAT Ibiza SC (2008 – 2017) Review
SEAT Ibiza SC (2008 – 2017) At A Glance
The SEAT Ibiza SC is a stylish and cheaper alternative to the likes of the popular Ford Fiesta. List prices are low if you're buying new and it's a cheap car to run too thanks to economical engines. While the little Ibiza may be getting on a bit, it's still easy on the eye, while its nimble handling and comfortable cabin make it a pleasant small hatch.
Low-cost motoring is key to the Ibiza's appeal. The range starts from under £10,000 new and almost all of the petrol engines are good for economy. The excellent 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol is the highlight of the range, with punchy performance and claimed economy of more than 65mpg.
There are also some good diesels. Early versions of the Ibiza were offered with the 1.6 and 1.2 TDI, with the latter returning more than 80mpg - according to the official figures at least. The range was updated in in 2015, with much better 1.4 TDI engine replacing both.
Visually, the Ibiza hasn't changed a great deal since it was launched in 2008. The bumpers, grille and headlights have been tweaked, but the design inside and out remains fairly close to the original. This means the interior is now pretty dated, with lots of dull grey plastics and some cheap-looking switchgear. There isn't a lot of space for those in the back either, with the arched roof and narrow footwells making it an uncomfortable fit for tall adults.
The three-door Ibiza SC shares its base with the Volkswagen Polo, which means it is refined for long distance motorway runs. The responsive steering and light weight mean it's engaging to drive on twisty roads. Admittedly, the ride is on the firm side of comfortable, but the 2015 mid-life update fixed this with much improved suspension.
Good to drive and attractively styled, the SEAT Ibiza has plenty to offer buyers who want something different to the Fiesta, Mazda 2 or Polo. What's more, with prices starting at under £10,000, the Ibiza is good value. SEAT dealers also have a reputation for being flexible when it comes to deals, which means canny buyers should be able to get a new, mid-spec Ibiza for considerably less than advertised.
SEAT Ibiza SC (2008 – 2017) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.0 to 2.0 TDI
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 26–82 mpg
The Ibiza has a huge choice of petrol and diesel engines, with power varying from a modest 75PS right up to 195PS.
All versions are easy to drive, with precise steering and decent body control. As a result the small SEAT provides smooth and confident handling on twisty country roads. Its motorway manners are also impressive, with low road and wind noise.
Some might find that that the ride is a little firm on early models, but an extensive update in 2012 and again in 2015 softened the suspension issues, without impacting the positive handling.
The Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2 may be sharper to drive, especially in the corners, but the Ibiza is a competent all-rounder. It's comfortable and easy enough to command, with a good driving position and quick steering. FR and Cupra models add stiffer suspension and larger wheels, which gives more cornering grip, but at the expense of ride quality.
When it was launched in 2008, SEAT offered 1.2 TDI and 1.6 TDI engines, with Ecomotive versions of the latter providing an official 83.1mpg and just 89g/km of CO2. A strong 2.0 TDI with 143PS was also available, although this cuts the claimed economy to 60mpg.
In 2015 SEAT dropped the two diesels in favour of a 1.4 TDI. The four-cylinder unit is available with either 75PS, 90PS or 105PS. Fuel economy is impressive for all versions and even with 90PS FR will return a claimed 74.4mpg with just 99g/km of CO2. Ecomotive versions will cut CO2 levels even further, while officially returning 78.5mpg.
For low mileage drivers, the petrols are also good and the real star performer is the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder. There are lots of different versions, quite confusingly, but go for the newer EcoTSI version with 95PS and it provides peppy performance along with official economy of more than 65mpg. Of course if you want real life economy figures, check out the Ibiza SC on Real MPG.
If you want a performance Ibiza, there's the top of the range Ibiza Cupra, which will cover 0-62mph in under seven-seconds. Originally powered by the 170PS 1.4-litre twin-charged petrol engine, the Cupra was revised in 2016 and given a more potent 192PS 1.8 TSI engine.

Depending on where you sit, the interior of the Ibiza is something of a love-hate relationship. The front seats are comfortable and spacious, with lots of head and leg room for tall adults. The space between the seats is also generous, which means the driver and front passenger won't clash elbows every time the former reaches for a gear change.
It is a different story in the back though. The arched roof limits headroom and there isn’t a lot of legroom either, which can make the rear seats a little claustrophobic for large adults. Getting in and out over the front seats is also awkward.
The driving position is excellent though, with lots of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel for all but the most basic of models. The small rear screen does hinder visibility a little, but front and side vision is fine, thanks to the sweeping windscreen and well-positioned door mirrors.
The dashboard, although dull and grey, is simple to operate and everything is within easy reach. As part of the 2015 model revamp, the Ibiza comes with a touchscreen and less buttons, which makes the dash much neater. Optional 'colour packs' were also added to the range, with the choice of purple, red or blue air vent covers and coloured details for the steering wheel and gear stick.
Boot space is roughly on par with the Ford Fiesta - with 292 litres - and higher spec models get 60/40 split and fold rear seats. However, if you need more storage, the Ibiza ST estate will be better suited for your needs with its considerable 430 litres available.
Equipment levels across the range are generous. Almost all models get air conditioning, alloy wheels and electrically heated door mirrors as standard. The mid-spec SE trim has the best level of kit though, with leather steering wheel and gear stick, split folding rear seats, cruise control and LED taillights and DRLs.
Standard Equipment (from 2016):
E is the entry-level trim and features 14-inch steel wheels with ‘Mamba’covers, emergency tyre repair kit, five-inch media system touchscreen, USB port, SD card slot, FM/AM radio, height-adjustable driver’s seat, height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, electric front windows along with remote central locking.
S adds 15-inch steel wheels with ‘Mamba’ covers, steering wheel mounted audio and phone controls, Bluetooth audio streaming with handsfree system, DAB radio, easy entry and centre rear headrest, air conditioning, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, alarm (perimeter and interior monitoring) with back-up horn and tow-away protection.
SOL adds to the S trim with 15-inch Marsala alloy wheels, cruise control, hill hold control and the tiredness recognition system.
SE adds to the S trim with 15-inch ‘Ibia’ alloy wheels, twin halogen headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), LED taillights, body-coloured door handles, body-coloured door mirrors, front fog lights with cornering function, five-inch colour infotainment touchscreen, six speakers leather steering wheel and gear knob plus split folding rear seats (60/40).
SE Technology builds on SE with navigation, MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Connect adds 16-inch ‘Design’ machined alloy wheels in Atom Grey, Atom Grey door mirrors, Atom Grey front grille frame, 6.5-inch colour touchscreen, voice recognition, six speakers, Blue Connect cloth and simil leather, upholstery with embossed Connect, Blue vent surrounds and steering wheel trim plus aluminium front door sill trims with Connect logo.
FR features 16-inch ‘Stratos’ alloy wheels, exclusive FR front and rear bumpers, twin exhaust pipes, flat-bottomed FR steering wheel, FR front sports seats, height-adjustable front passenger’s seat, electrically folding door mirrors, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto dimming rear-view mirror, coming and leaving home headlight function, sports suspension, steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles (DSG models only) and electronic differential lock XDS.
Cupra is the range-topping trim and features 17-inch ‘Barcino’ alloy wheels, xenon headlights with adaptive front-lighting system, gloss black door mirrors, gloss black front grille, Cupra front and rear bumpers, dark tinted rear windows, race-honed central exhaust, drive profile system, Cupra steering wheel, sports seats and climate control.

June 2008
Officially announced as SEAT Ibiza SportCoupe
At 1,428mm the SportCoupé is 17mm lower than the five-door. Technical highlights include the option of seven-speed DSG double clutch gearbox for the first time in a supermini. This will be available on 105 PS 1.6-litre versions.
FR and Cupra versions of the new Ibiza will certainly sport SC styling when they make their debuts. Official 'World launch' of production versions at London Motor Show, July 2008.
October 2008
Cupra and Ecomotive versions introduced
Cupra has a 180 PS 1.4-litre chain cam TSI supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine and a seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) transmission, complete with steering wheel paddle shifters. 17" alloy wheels, a rear diffuser incorporating a centrally-placed trapezoid exhaust pipe, Cupra sports seats and aluminium pedals.
Ecomotive has an official carbon dioxide emissions figure of just 99 g/km and qualifies for free VED. Available in both 5dr and SC versions, the Ibiza Ecomotive is equipped with a clean and frugal 80 PS 1.4 TDI engine with DPF diesel particulate filter. Its notably low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are achieved through engine software modifications, as well as enhancements to the gearbox and gear ratios, the fitment of new 175/70 R14 low rolling-resistance tyres and the substitution of the spare wheel for a puncture kit. New closed front grille and revised rear spoiler which combine to reduce air resistance.
Ibiza Cupra in showrooms late summer 2009. Has 180PS 1.4-litre petrol engine featuring not only a turbocharger and supercharger mated to a seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) transmission, complete with steering wheel shift-paddles.
April 2009
SEAT Ibiza FR announced
150PS twincharger (turbo and supercharged) 1.4 TSI engine. This engine provides greater flexibility, punchy performance and lower fuel consumption figures and emissions levels, while fully complying with EU5 emissions legislation. Latest generation seven-speed DSG gearbox with steering wheel shift paddles fitted as standard. Addition of the XDS system provides greater driver confidence and safety.
As with the Leon Cupra, this electronic system works together with ESP, improving the car’s performance when traction is lost by braking the wheel that loses grip. Styling highlights include new bumpers that lend a purposeful appearance, featuring front honeycomb slats and a chrome surround for the central grille in combination with the Arrow Design concept. Other tell-tale exterior elements are silver-coloured door mirror cases, exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels and twin tailpipes. Has ESP, TCS + EBA, ABS, Hill Hold Control, low tyre-pressure warning, driver and passenger airbags, head-chest airbag, trip computer, cruise control, climate control, sports suspension and cornering foglights, among other features.
May 2009
1.6 TDI launched
New 105PS belt cam 1.6-litre common rail four cylinder TDI to arrives. CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km (100% first year write down), combined fuel economy of 67.2 mpg, 0-60 mph 10.2 seconds, 117mph top speed. 250 Nm torque peak at just 1,500 rpm. 5-speed gearbox. Desel particulate filter (DPF) is standard.
May 2009
Ibiza Bocanegra revealed
The new Bocanegra has attractive 17-inch ‘Sira’ alloys. Inside, the sports seats are upholstered with special fabric made up of rhomboids stitched together in red, while the upper part of the seats sport the logo that identifies this version – a capital ‘B’ also stitched in red. Gloss black trim, aluminium-clad pedals and, of course, the Bocanegra logo on the instrument panel distinguish this car from the forthcoming FR and Cupra versions, too.
In its home market the new Bocanegra will be equipped with the twin charged 1.4 TSI engine, either in 150 PS or 180 PS guise. This new generation engine guarantees both brilliant performance and exceptional economy. Meanwhile, XDS electronic limited slip differential and a state-of-the-art seven-speed DSG gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts underline the Bocanegra’s hi-tech appeal.
January 2010
Ibiza FR TDI introduced
Turbocharged diesel engine offers 143PS – giving 0 to 60 mph in only 7.9 seconds (8.0 seconds 5dr) and a top speed of 130 mph where legal (129 mph 5dr). Linked as standard to a twin shaft six-speed manual gearbox the common rail diesel is fully Euro V-compliant and is capable of 62.7 mpg on the EU’s official combined cycle with an official CO2 figure of just 119 g/km, making it a sporty yet tax efficient choice both in terms of road fund licence and business drivers’ benefit in kind liabilities.
April 2011
SEAT introduces new Ibiza Copa
The new trim level is launched in all three Ibiza bodystyles – sporty 3dr SC, practical 5dr and capacious ST estate – in one designation, SE Copa, and with a simple choice between two of the most popular engines, 1.4 16V petrol or 1.2 TDI CR turbodiesel.
It builds on the already generous SE spec by adding the following:
- 16” ‘Fabula’ alloy wheels (1.4 only)
- Climate control (including refrigerated glovebox)
- Rain and light sensors for automatic wipers and lights
- Dark tinted rear windows
- Leather steering wheel and gearknob
- Auto-dimming rear view mirror
- Bespoke Copa upholstery
These features come in addition to the standard Ibiza SE’s medley of equipment which features the likes of cruise control, six-speaker MP3 compatible radio/CD with AUX-in and steering column-mounted controls, alarm, immobiliser and electric windows all round.
Ibiza SE Copa prices start at a highly competitive £11,995 RRP for the SC version. All Copa models available at launch with a £1,000 off the RRP (making it £10,995), plus the option of two years’ 0% finance (subject to terms and conditions) as well as a variety of enticing Personal Contract Plan offers.
January 2012
Revised Ibiza SC announced
The trapezoidal grille has flatter proportions and the horizontal honeycomb structure of the grille and the lower air intake emphasise the car's width. The bumpers front and rear have been redesigned, with a look that is particularly accentuated on the sporty Ibiza FR version. Standard equipment on the FR, and available as an option on other models, are large fog lamps with integrated cornering light.
Headlamps are available in two halogen versions or with optional bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. The DRLs trace the form of the headlamps to deliver a unique light signature, as do the optional LED rear lights.
Interior detail changes include new design of Climatronic climate control system, new paint surfaces, new instrument binnacle with improved display, significantly larger glove compartment, another now 1-.7 litres. SC luggage capacity 284 litres. 5-dr: 292 litres and a split/folding rear seatbacks. ST offers 430 litres up to a maximum of 1,164 litres with rear seats folded.
Range of petrol units extends from economical 1.2-litre 60 PS to1.4 TSI with supercharger and turbocharger. A peak power figure of 150PS and standard-fit DSG transmission give 7.5 second 0-60 and top speed of 132mph. In the new Ibiza, this power unit is now also available in the ST creating an Ibiza ST FR.
Particular efficiency is delivered by the Ibiza 1.2 TSI Ecomotive - a state-of-the-art turbocharged power unit with 105PS it offers a refined drive with its maximum torque of 175 Nm at just 1,550 rpm, yet an EC 55mpg combined with to start/stop.
Ibiza 1.2 TDI E Ecomotive, also with a start/stop system offers EC combined 83mpg, equating to 89g/km CO2 in all bodyshell variants. Yet the compact hi-tech TDI delivers strong performance with its 75 PS and very respectable peak torque of 180 Nm. The sporty Ibiza diesel is the 2.0 TDI with a beefy 143 PS. No competitor in this segment offers such a powerful diesel; no other masters the combination of performance and efficiency so successfully - a top speed of 130 mph comes with an EC combined fuel consumption of 61.4mpg.
As well as five- and six-speed manual gearboxes, a number of engines are offered with DSG transmissions either as standard equipment or as an option. This dual-clutch transmission offers not only the comfort of an automatic but also the extra benefit of better efficiency than a tyorque converter auto.
January 2013
SEAT Ibiza Toca announced
In the Ibiza Toca, buyers get a set of 16-inch ‘Stratos' alloy wheels (up from 15 inches) along with the SEAT Portable System, for a £425 premium over the SE car on which it's based.

April 2014
Ibiza FR Edition launched
It's powered by a new 140 PS ACT petrol engine that replaces the 150PS 1.4 TSI non-ACT engine in the Ibiza range, offering performance as close as makes no difference (it takes 0.2 seconds longer to hit 62mph) but delivering a 12.2 mpg average efficiency improvement, and 30g/km less CO2 – down to 109g/km.
The result is a car that will hit the 62 mph benchmark in under eight seconds, but is rated at 60.1 mpg on the combined cycle. ACT works by deactivating a two cylinders when not needed, such as braking or coasting, thus saving fuel.
Available with a manual transmission only, the standard 1.4 TSI ACT FR 140 PS is also £1,015 cheaper than the 150PS car it replaces, which came with a DSG automatic gearbox as standard.
The FR Edition, in addition to the usual FR specification, adds red seatbelts, red brake callipers, titanium-coloured 17-inch alloy wheels, matching coloured door mirrors, climate control and dark tinted rear windows. The FR Edition SC costs £15,320.

What to watch out for
Reports of very high early oil consumption of 1.2 TSI 105.
28-05-2011:There seems to be a problem of tinklng noises from 1.4 TSI engines. Google <1.4 tsi engine failure>, but the posts date back to 2008. One failure was at 80,000km. Others have heard tinklings at as little as 3,000 miles. Some owners who have had their cars chipped by Revo to 226PS are having problems, but that isn't really surprising, is it? As far as I can gather it's a timing chain / timing chain tensioner problem. The chains stretch, probably because they are not being properly lubricated, and that's probably because owners are not changing the engine oil and filters frequently enough.
20-10-2012:1 year old, 6,800 mile 1.4TSI Twincharger engine in FR DSG replaced by SEAT dealer due to excessive oil consumption.
15-12-2012:Report of total failure of engine in a leased 20,000 mile 60 reg Bocanegra. £4,200 initially demanded of lessee for engine replacement, though SEAT may have later taken responsibility.
11-01-2013:Warranty on DSG 7 speed dry clutch DQ200 gearbox extended to 5 years or 150,000 kilometres in Russia and China.
03-11-2013:12,600 mile 2010 Ibiza ST 1.2TSI DSG reported as starting to use oil after 2nd service at 10k miles. By 12k miles oil light came, dipstick did not register and 2 litres were needed. SEAT said that 0.5 litres per 1,000 miles is normal, but the engine had used twice that.
23-12-2013:Diesel engine of 2008 SEAT Ibiza SC wrecked by engine lubrication oil becoming contaminated with diesel.
22-02-2014:SEAT dealers now up to speed to change the synthetic oil in 2012 and 2013 DQ200 7-speed DSGs to mineral oil.
02-04-2014:Repeated loss of drive in 2013 SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.4 TSI DSG, bought new. Thought to be a problem with mechatronics. Surprising that the SEAT dealer had not heard of the transmission oil recall.
10-04-2014:2009 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 TSI FR used oil all its life and suffered engine failure at 37k miles, owner quoted £5,500 to fix. This was a 150PS 'Twincharger' engine.
29-01-2015:Severe oil consumption problem reported from engine of 2011 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 TSI FR 180 Twincharger.
20-07-2015:Another SEAT Ibiza Cupra Twincharger 180 blew a hole in its block at 30k miles.
26-11-2015:Mechatronics of 2010 SEAT Ibiza SC DSG completely failed on an Ibiza in the Lebanon. This is a Worldwide (but frequently denied) problem with the VAG dry-clutch 7-speed DSG/s-tronic transmission. In an effort to make them maintenance-free they were filled with synthetic fluid on the production line. The problem is that over time and especially in a hot climate, this fluid becomes conductive and fuses the Mechatronics leaving the car with no means of changing gear and thereby no drive. If the car has been fully maintained by a SEAT dealer you may have the basis for a claim against the dealer or against SEAT. There is little point in opening the box and trying to replace the Mechatronics alone. Better a replacement transmission, already filled with mineral rather than synthetic fluid. Google <replacement VAG 7-speed DSGs>.
16-09-2016:Problems reported with SEAT Ibiza FR 1.4 Twincharger 150PS DSG. Watyer pump failure, continual 7-speed dry clutch DSG issues, clutch pack failure at 44k miles, hard ride on 40 profile tyres.
18-11-2016:Another CAVE Twincharger engine failure reported, this time ar 44k miles on a 2011 SEAT Ibiza Cupra. New engine being fitted by SEAT dealer at owner's expense.
05-10-2017:Severely corroded front brake discs reported on 2015 SEAT Ibiza Cupra at 25,000 miles. New discs and pads cost £472.
05-04-2018:No official word from VAG, but ECU testing believes that the DQ200 7-speed dry cutch Mechatronics control box was finally re-engineered in 2016. This DSG 7 control unit is a common failure with engines under 2.0 litres on the SEAT Ibiza (2008 – 2015)
14-08-2018:Report of rattling timing chain in 2015/65 SEAT Ibiza 1.2TSI FR, still under warranty. Dealer reluctant to fix. Engine also starts up with high idle speed and takes a few minutes to settle down and become drivable.
09-12-2018:Report of February 2017 SEAT Ibiza SC 1.0TSI Eco FR 115HP 7-speed dry clutch DQ200 DSG with just 7,300 milesd and run on Shell V-Power developing a jerky take up that makes parking very difficult as its very tricky to ease the car back or forward. Also a 12% - 15% increase in fuel consumed.
27-07-2019:Report of engine management light and EPC light of 2010 SEAT Ibiza Cupra DSG coming on. Electronic interrogation showed: Auto Trans Component: GSG DSG AG7 1 fault found P177F. This translated to 'intermittent voltage to hydraulic pump' and is a serious problem with the mechatronics.
