Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020) Review
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020) At A Glance
Launched in 2010, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a stylish alternative to the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf - as well as upmarket alternatives like the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3.
It’s available with a variety of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, combined with six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. The range consists of the standard Alfa Romeo Giulietta, as well as Super, Speciale and Veloce models. While the Giulietta might turn heads thanks to its rarity and sporty looks, it was criticised for its cramped interior and poor interior plastics when it was new - something which is even more difficult to ignore as rivals have received numerous updates during the time the Giulietta has been on sale.
You’re making a bold statement buying an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. While it might be prettier than cars like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, its interior is seriously below-par, with cheap materials and a cramped cabin compared to alternatives. Indeed, adults in the back will be very uncomfortable - and even up front, the driving position feels awkward.
Various updates over the years have done little to bring the Giulietta up to date. Bear in mind that new versions of all of the Giulietta’s rivals have been introduced since Alfa Romeo launched its family hatchback in 2010.
The biggest change came in 2014 when a new Uconnect colour touchscreen infotainment system was introduced. This is now standard in 5.0-inch guise on standard Alfa Giulietta and Super models, while the Speciale and Veloce come with a 6.5-inch system. It’s laggy to operate and, with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, is well past its sell-by date.
A further light refresh followed in 2016 with various cosmetic updates intended to mimic the (new at the time) Alfa Romeo Giulia.
The Giulietta’s engine line-up is pretty good, with the 1.4-litre TB petrol being the strong seller. This is available in a variety of flavours - 120, 150 or 170PS - while diesel drivers are catered for with the 2.0-litre JTDM-2 engines (available with 150 or 175PS).
The top version is the performance Veloce model - Alfa's take on the GTI and previously badged the Cloverleaf. It’s available with a 175PS version of the 2.0-litre diesel engine, while the 1.7-litre petrol boasts an impressive 240PS and a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds. Sadly, while it looks great, it's pretty underwhelming to drive which makes its price tag of close to £30,000 even more laughable.
All models get Alfa Romeo’s DNA drive mode selector. This is gimmicky, using Dynamic, Natural and All-weather modes to tweak parameters like the engine, brakes, steering and accelerator depending on your requirements.
As you’d expect of an Alfa Romeo, the Giulietta is pretty good to drive, with plenty of composure during cornering. It’s not as sharp as a Ford Focus, though, and not impressive enough to make up for flaws in other areas. It has also got an exceptionally firm ride.
Another factor going against the Giulietta is its reliability record. We’ve had various faults reported over the years ranging from electrical issues to expensive timing belt failure. It’s fair to say that Alfa Romeo doesn’t have the most enviable reputation for reliability, either, and consistently ranks poorly in our Satisfaction Index. The brand’s three-year warranty does little to put your mind at rest, either.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.4 TB to 2.0 JTDm-2 175
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 25–68 mpg
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Handling and ride quality
Its steering is fairly numb, but there’s plenty of grip and the car doesn’t lean too much in corners. You’d be better buying a Ford Focus if handling is high up in your priorities, but the Giulietta responds well to keen driving.
There’s a DNA drive mode selector fitted as standard across the range. This changes parameters such as the throttle response, braking and steering - meaning it’ll feel dartier in dynamic mode, while reactions are slower in all-weather sport. Most drivers will find it best left in standard ‘natural’ mode, though.
With passive suspension, the Giulietta’s suspension doesn’t respond to the DNA selector - but that’s not unusual for a car in this segment. The standard suspension is pretty firm, while the sports suspension (standard on Speciale and Veloce models) is uncomfortable on anything but perfect road surfaces - especially when combined with the 18-inch alloy wheels which are standard fit on these trim levels.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Engines
Unless you cover a lot of motorway miles, you should be looking at the very good 1.4-litre petrol engine in the Giulietta. The standard 120PS unit is a surprisingly eager unit, happy to pull throughout the entire rev range, although the more powerful 150 and 170PS engines do a better job of living up to the Giulietta’s sporty appearance.
The 1.6-litre diesel is the choice for company car drivers or anyone seeking low fuel bills (provided you cover enough miles to warrant a diesel). It’s not quick on paper, accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 10 seconds flat with the manual gearbox, but it’s got enough torque to provide fast enough responses for most drivers.
The more powerful diesels feel a little less strained on the motorway, while there’s the sportier 1750 TBi petrol engine available in the Veloce, if you’re after hot hatch thrills.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Safety
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta has been tested by Euro NCAP - the independent European safety organisation - with disappointing results.
It scored a below-par three out of five stars, with testers criticising its lack of safety assist systems like autonomous emergency braking and speed or lane assist. This doesn’t fundamentally make it an unsafe car - but more modern rivals are much better equipped with technology to help prevent a crash. It scores a reasonable 72 per cent for adult occupants and 56 per cent for children, with Isofix child seat mounts on the outer rear seats.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Towing
While the Alfa Romeo Giulietta isn’t an obvious choice for towing, most models can officially tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1300kg.
We’d recommend the 150PS 2.0-litre diesel if you plan to tow anywhere near this amount regularly, although it’s worth noting that the 175PS diesel - with the automatic gearbox - is limited to 600kg. Most Giuliettas have a kerb weight of around 1300kg so we’d advise that inexperienced towers shouldn’t attempt to lug more than around 1100kg.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Practicality
Front seat passengers will be fine, provided they’re not particularly tall, although the driving position feels fairly awkward - there’s plenty of adjustment in the seats and steering wheel, but it’s still difficult to get comfortable. The steering wheel can obscure the speedo if you’re not careful, while the pedals feel cumbersome in their positioning.
It’s worse news in the back, where there’s considerably less legroom than rivals like the SEAT Leon and Ford Focus. A sloping roofline hinders headroom, too, while the small windows means it feels fairly claustrophobic back there. Neither kids or adults will thank you for making them travel in the back of the Giulietta.
The 350-litre boot is smaller than rivals, too, although 60:40 split folding rear seats mean up to 1045 litres is available if required. There’s quite a high boot lip which makes loading bulky items tricky.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Quality and finish
With lots of harsh plastics and flimsy switchgear, the Giulietta’s cabin is leagues behind the likes of the Volkswagen Golf. Updates over the years have helped - with new dashboard and door panel finishes from 2016 - but it’s still a long way off feeling like a premium contender.
The standard leather upholstery (and various sporting touches) on Veloce models help make it feel a bit more special, but there’s still no hiding the fact that this is an old car developed on a budget.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Infotainment
Depending on trim level, the Giulietta comes with a 5.0- or 6.5-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system. The former looks very small today, so you’d be best looking for a Speciale or Veloce model if budget allows. The latter also come with built-in GPS navigation, while all models come with Bluetooth connectivity. Unfortunately there’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto - both would be useful for avoiding the Alfa Romeo’s rather slow infotainment systems.
On the plus side, there are lots of physical buttons providing useful shortcuts to things like navigation or the radio in the media system. There are physical controls for the climate control, too.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020) value for money
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Prices
Upgrading to the Speciale model will cost you an extra £1500 or so, with a sportier appearance (thanks to dark exterior highlights, a gloss black sports exhaust and Alcantara sports seats with red stitching).
The 1.6 JTDM-2 diesel starts at a fairly reasonable £21,090 in Super trim, rising to £23,090 as a Speciale. That’s combined with a manual gearbox - you’re looking at a smidgen over £22,300 for the Super with the twin-clutch automatic transmission. A 2.0-litre diesel will cost you around £27,000 in Veloce trim.
If you’re looking to finance a new Giulietta, Alfa Romeo often offers some generous deposit contributions on its PCP offers.
As an example, you could be looking at an Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 petrol Super for around £239/month following a £4,499 customer deposit, while the manufacturer will top up your deposit by an extra £1500. That’s for a 48-month contract with 5.9 per cent APR and optional final payment of around £5500 if you want to keep the car.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta represents better value for money on the second-hand market. You can bag an as-new pre-registered model for as little as £14,000 - provided you’re not too fussy about specification. Be warned, though, this could be a sign of what’s to follow in terms of depreciation.
Early Giuliettas can now be picked up for less than £2500, while a tidy three-year-old mid-spec example with average miles will cost you in the region of £13,000.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010 – 2020): Running Costs
Data from Honest John’s Real MPG database suggests the Giulietta returns around 75 per cent of its official fuel economy figures in the real world. Although fuel efficiency is dependent on a multitude of factors, most drivers ought to see late-30s MPG for petrol-powered models, and mid-to-late-40s MPG for diesel Giuliettas.
That’s just about in the realms of acceptability for a car of this size, although unremarkable compared to more efficient alternatives like the hybrid Toyota Corolla.
The 1.6-litre JTDM-2 diesel will be the most appealing to company car drivers but, with CO2 emissions from 144g/km, it’s still going to be quite costly in company car tax compared to more efficient rivals.
Insurance groups obviously vary depending on specification and engine choices, although the Giulietta shouldn’t cost a great deal to insure.
In terms of long-term reliability, Alfa Romeo doesn’t have a great record on this front, and we’ve certainly had a few issues reported with the Giulietta since its launch in 2010. Timing belt failures are common, as are electrical issues. The brand usually performs average at best in the Honest John Satisfaction Index, while the Alfa only offers a three-year warranty on new cars.

The entry-level Alfa Romeo Giulietta - badged simply ‘Giulietta’ - is pretty basic in terms of specification, with highlights include a 5.0-inch media system (with Bluetooth, DAB radio and a CD player), 16-inch alloy wheels and manual climate control. We’d suggest upgrading to the Super model with its rear parking sensors, cruise control and front fog lights. Bizarrely, the Super also comes with a cooled glove box.
Things start to feel a smidgen more upmarket with the Speciale model, thanks to its 18-inch wheels, Alcantara sports upholstery, 6.5-inch media system (with navigation), front/rear parking sensors and lowered suspension. The flagship Veloce model comes with a different style of 18-inch alloy wheels and various sporty touches like the leather/Alcantara sports seats.

February 2011
2.0 JTDM-2 140PS introduced
New 2.0 JTDM-2 140 bhp for both company car drivers and private owners requiring low fuel consumption and low running costs combined with driving comfort for long trips.
The 2.0 JTDM-2 140 is equipped with the latest generation JTDM-2MultiJet Common Rail system that is already present on the 1.6 JTDM-2 (105 bhp) and the 2.0 JTDM-2 (170 bhp) power units. The system represents the most technologically advanced solution for controlling high injection pressures (around 1600 bar) independently of engine RPM and quantity of fuel injected.
This technology, combined with an electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger, guarantees excellent torque delivery: 350 Nm at just 1750 rpm (with the D.N.A. selector in Dynamic position) and 320 Nm at 1500 rpm (in Normal) – giving it the highest torque in its class compared to similarly efficient and powerful engines.
This new Alfa Romeo Giulietta is EC certificated at 119 g/km and 62.8 mpg in the combined cycle, has a top speed of 127 mph and acceleration from 0 - 62 mph in 9 seconds. The engine is designed for customers who appreciate excellent throttle response but are also concerned with fuel consumption and running costs. In real terms, with a 13% BIK (Benefit in Kind) rate, 40% tax bracket company car drivers will pay as little as £90 a month in company car tax for the Lusso trim version.
The engine is Euro 5 compliant and is equipped with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and Start&Stop as standard. Moreover, advanced exhaust gas treatment technologies have been used, namely a close coupled diesel particulate filter and a built-in EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system that improves control of temperature and gas flow, simultaneously guaranteeing lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption.
Lastly, the 2.0 JTDM-2 140 bhp boasts a particularly long servicing interval, thus minimising work required on the vehicle during its life cycle and cutting its running costs. The fact that the car only needs servicing every 21,000 miles is a testament to the high quality levels achieved and the efforts made to improve durability and efficiency even further, by means of careful work on individual components. How this will work out in real life is another matter entirely.
March 2012
Alfa Giulietta TCT introduced
Available in Lusso or Veloce trim levels on the Giulietta, the latest generation Alfa TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) dry dual clutch semi-automatic transmission is the class benchmark for its effectiveness in balancing high performance, low fuel consumption and low emissions, and is combined in the Giulietta with the 1.4 TB MultiAir 170 bhp and 2.0 JTDM-2 170 bhp engines.
Equipped with the 1.4 TB MultiAir 170 bhp engine, the Giulietta TCT's top speed is 135 mph with just 7.7 seconds needed to accelerate from 0 - 62 mph. Even with this excellent performance, fuel consumption and emissions are extraordinarily low: 54.3 mpg over a Combined Cycle and 121 g/km of CO2 - values that make the Giulietta one of the most environmentally-friendly and efficient petrol-powered compacts on the market, even when compared to manual gearbox competitors with lower power ratings and performance.
When combined with the 2.0 JTDM-2 170 bhp diesel engine, ALFA TCT values continue to impress. In fact, compared to the same manual gearbox version, acceleration from 0 - 62 mph is improved from 8.0 seconds to 7.9 seconds, fuel consumption (Combined Cycle) improves from 60.4 mpg to 62.8 mpg, while CO2 emissions reach a record level for an engine of this power: 119 g/km (124 g/km with the manual gearbox). Low running costs together with low fuel consumption make it an ideal choice for company fleets.

Revised 2014 range announced
The new 150 HP 2.0 JTDM engine is making its first appearance with the 2014 range. It is equipped with the second-generation MultiJet injection system that both optimises engine combustion in all operating conditions and ensures reduction in fuel consumption and noise at the same time.
The other new engines are 120PS and 170PS versions of the 1.4 MultiAir petrol.
New paint finishes for 2014 include Moonlight Pearl, Anodizzato Blue and Bronze. The new look of the front grille and the chrome-plated frame of the foglights renew its front. The front headlights have DRL with LED technology and a day light function for maximum active safety. The innovative rear lights use LED technology in the same way, which serves not only a stylish purpose but also preventive safety.

Giulietta engine range revised
The 1.6 JTDM-2 diesel engine not only benefits from a reduction in emissions from 104g/km to 99g/km, thanks to the addition of a variable-geometry turbo charger and low rolling-resistance tyres, it also brings an increase in power from 105PS to 120PS. The drop in emissions results in a one percent BIK reduction to 17 percent and the annual Road Fund Licence is now £0.
The uprated engine improves the 0-62mph by 1.3 seconds to just 10.0 seconds. At the same time, the new Giulietta 1.6 JTDM-2 can now return 74.3mpg on the official combined fuel economy cycle, a significant improvement over the impressive 70.6mpg recorded by the current 1.6 JTDM2 105PS engine.
Indeed, every engine is now compliant with the latest Euro 6 regulations and (with the exception of the recently-introduced 2.0 JTDM-2turbo diesel 150PS) sees its emissions and economy improved, resulting in a one percent BIK reduction on all engines from the entry-level 1.4 Turbo Petrol 120PS to the 1750TBi 240PS TCT unit that powers the high-performance Quadrifoglio Verde version, while the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol 150PS and 170PS engines slip into a lower emissions band, reducing the OTR price by £130 and annual running costs even further.
Pricing for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta range remains unchanged despite the engine upgrades, with pricing for the 1.4 TB 120PS Progression starting at £18,450 OTR and the 1.6 JTDM-2 120PS Progression priced from £19,500 OTR. Pricing for the Business Edition range, which feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system with voice activated satellite navigation, 3D mapping and DAB digital radio; front and rear parking sensors; automatic lights and wipers; alloy wheels and metallic paint all as standard, start from just £19,080 OTR for the 1.6 JTDM-2 120PS turbo diesel.
