What can I do to repair my Ford Escort GTI which keeps losing power?

My 1997 Escort GTI keeps losing power. When I start it up it idles fine, but when I press the accelerator it chugs and splutters when it is cold. Took it on a run yesterday and intermittantly it loses power and starts chugging. When I take my foot off the gas and let the revs come down to idle speed, then give it power again, sometimes this rectifies it for a while and then the same thing happens again. I have disonnected the battery to reset the ECU and this has had no effect. Has anybody got any ideas what I can do?

Reads like a gummed up fuel system to me. Try a fuel system cleaner and Shell V-Power petrol.
