  • New Toyota Land Cruiser in radical retro redesign for 2024
  • Bold new design builds on more than 70 years of Toyota Land Cruiser heritage
  • Uses a mud-plugging 2.8-litre diesel engine and heavy-duty all-wheel drive tech
  • Released in first half of 2024 with prices likely to start from more than £50,000

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is an exciting retro redesign for the world-famous 4x4 that arrives in 2024 to take the fight to the ultra-successful new Land Rover Defender.

Harking back to its roots, the desirable design of the new Toyota Land Cruiser has grabbed the headlines and means interest in the legendary 4x4 line is sure to be high as its release nears.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser will also challenge another high-end 4x4 icon, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Toyota is promising unprecedented levels of off-road ability which, when combined with the firm’s famed reliability, makes it a tantalising new proposition for 4x4 fans.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser prices and release date

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has enjoyed a world debut to huge acclaim. The focus will now be on its UK release, which Toyota currently says is due in the first half of 2024.

New Toyota Land Cruiser prices will not be released for some time. For context, a new Land Rover Defender 110 starts from over £63,000, so we certainly wouldn’t expect new Toyota Land Cruiser prices to start from less than £50,000.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be offered in a limited-run First Edition model. Only around 3000 will come to Europe. Desirable features include dedicated bi-tone exterior paint – either Sand or Smoky Blue. These high-end launch editions are bound to be collectable.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser styling, interior and technology

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is a guaranteed head-turner. The retro-themed styling draws from the 4x4’s seven decades of heritage, giving it a contemporary and decidedly premium twist. Compared to the outgoing Toyota Land Cruiser, it oozes desirability.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has a squared-off, upright front end, with stocky wheelarches and an angular bonnet. Core models have horizontal LED headlights. A limited-run Toyota Land Cruiser First Edition will have classic round headlights.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has a “functional beauty that’s found in the best professional tools,” says Toyota. “The chunky, tough look expresses the “back to its origins” quality of the new Land Cruiser, but it is also highly practical with a form-follows-function approach.”

Key functional features on the new Toyota Land Cruiser include short overhangs, sculpted corners and a narrowed lower body. Toyota says body parts have been designed for easy replacement in the event of any damage.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is launched in five-door guise, which measures 4920mm long, 1980mm wide and 1870mm tall. There is no word yet on if there will be a shorter three-door new Toyota Land Cruiser to rival the Land Rover Defender 90, or a commercial vehicle van version to rival the Land Rover Defender Hard Top.

Inside, the new Toyota Land Cruiser has a modern feel courtesy of two HD screens. The driver’s display is very comprehensive, while the central infotainment touchscreen offers plenty of functionality including an array of dedicated 4x4 displays.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has an upgraded Multi-Terrain Monitor. Using a high-resolution camera, it gives the driver a clear view immediately ahead and around the vehicle. New Multi-Terrain Select automatically switches settings to suit the demands of different off-road conditions.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser’s interior has a premium appearance, but it will also be easy to use even over challenging terrain, thanks to chunky controls and plenty of buttons. Digital controls have not taken over inside the new Toyota Land Cruiser.

The space-efficient Toyota GA-F platform means interior practicality should be improved. The new Toyota Land Cruiser is offered in both five-seat and seven-seat guise, with fully fold-flat second- and third-row seats to make maximum use of the space.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser will feel more spacious, too. The lowered belt line means the side windows are deeper, while all-round visibility is enhanced by a low dashboard cowl and the horizontal instrument panel design.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser engines, performance and fuel economy

The new Toyota Land Cruiser’s traditional body-on-frame construction is 50% more rigid. The combined body and frame rigidity is improved by 30%. This all helps make the new Toyota Land Cruiser even more unstoppable off-road, while also improving on-road responsiveness, handling and comfort.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is the first to use electronic power steering. This reduces the amount of kickback over rough surfaces. It also makes the vehicle smoother and more direct to drive.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser also features a novel disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The tech is called SGM, or Stabiliser with Disconnection Mechanism. Via a switch on the dashboard, the driver can isolate the anti-roll bar for better drivability on rough roads, then reconnect it for better comfort and handling on the highway.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has improved basic suspension performance and increased wheel articulation – “a key factor in off-road driving capability”.

From launch in 2024, the new Toyota Land Cruiser will be powered by a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine. It produces 204ps and is paired with an all-new eight-speed automatic gearbox. It will be able to tow loads of up to 3500kg.

In early 2025, a new Toyota Land Cruiser electrified alternative will arrive. The diesel engine will be combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, for enhanced fuel economy and performance.

When was the first Toyota Land Cruiser launched?

The new Toyota Land Cruiser has more than 70 years of heritage. The first Toyota Land Cruiser was launched in 1951 as a mobility vehicle for the Japanese police force.

Will there be an electric new Toyota Land Cruiser?

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is not yet going pure EV, but there will be an electrified version, with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. It arrives in early 2025.
