My Peugeot 307 HDi lost power and started smoking - does the exhaust need to be removed?

I have a Peugeot 307 HDi Quicksilver 05 plate (1.6). I was coming home on the M4 last week and all was fine, but after paying the bridge tolls, as I pulled away, there was no power. With my foot flat to the floor I managed to get up to 45/50mph. About five miles later the anti-pollution fault light came on and a cloud of blue / grey smoke came out of the exhaust. The next day the car started fine and the anti-pollution light has gone, however the car wont go over 3000 rpm or faster than about 50mph with my foot flat to the floor and going downhill. On the slightest incline the car needs to be in first gear to move at all. I can't afford to go to a dealer and the local garage seem to think they need to remove the exhaust. What do you think is wrong?

The DPF is stuffed. You probably need to have it replaced. They only last 80,000 - 120,000 miles at best anyway.
