What's happening with the Volkswagen software update?

Having just had a long conversation with someone from within the VAG network regarding the emissions software update. I asked why nothing was apparently happening when the update program was supposed to have begun in March.

I was told that the recall has started and so far there were no detrimental effects(but you would expect them to say that) and that the vehicles were being recalled in batches of chassis numbers.

Therefore it seems that not all of one model is being recalled in one go but a number of each type of vehicle and may take till the end of the year to be completed.

That is correct. It started in May 2016 with the 2.0 litre TDIs that require no more than a software reprogram. Only one report of a car going wrong afterwards, and that was probably coincidental rather than cause by the re-boot.
