Mazda MX-5 air con problems

I have a 2007 Mazda MX-5 that has done 30,000 miles. I took it to a dealer because of a "rattling" under the bonnet. They are charging me almost £1000 to replace the air con compressor and auxiliary belt. Is it normal for the compressor to only last 30,000 miles?

Older air con compressors are clutched and a rattling usually indicates that all that needs to be replaced is the clutch at around £100. Get it to an a/c specialist.
