Buying an old CR-V. What to look for?

I am considering buying an old CR-V for short journeys. There are two offerings locally, a 52 Plate SE Sport Vtec with 73k miles and another on a 55 plate with 134k miles.

Both have full histories with our local Honda dealership, have been serviced on the button every time and are in generally good condition. MOT history is clean too with no sign of letting things deteriorate.

My question is which may be he better bet and with this age of car is there anything to look for or anything that will cost big money just around the corner.

The 2001-2006 Honda CR-V was probably the most reliable SUV ever made. But, of course, they are all now more than 10 years old and age causes problems with any car. The most common is water getting into the rear diff and affecting the AWD system. See the entry in www.honestjohn.co.uk for more. Manuals do about 28 mpg. Autos a lot less than that, so this is also a consideration. Steering and handling is very unexceptionable. Not up to current standards. A RAV-4 is much better.
