Diesel or petrol used Honda Civic?

Hi I'm looking to buy a used Honda Civic (56-59) and am unsure weather to get the 2.2 diesel model or the 1.8 petrol. They are both around the £5k mark. It is to ve used as our main family car. Generally I will be doing local journeys but it will be used for longer journeys for days out/holidays etc. I cover about 10,000 miles a year.

Obviously the diesel has slightly cheaper running costs but wondered what you thought is best for us in the long run including matienace and re sale value in thr future.

Many thanks

The diesel does not have a DPF. But generally the 1.8iVTEC seems to have been more reliable. No turbo. And it can be surprisingly economical. I got 45mpg and the Real MPG average is not much worse.
