Driver who caused crash has fled to Romania - what should I do?

My partner was driving along and hit by a Jeep SUV that was pulling out of a nearby driveway. We called the Police and the driver took responsibility over the accident and showed his insurance cover letter and said he was a named driver.

He lives in Luton and the owner of the car was in North Ireland. Now the driver has disappeared and the insurance firm claims that it was a case of mistaken identity. How should I proceed now?

It doesn't matter if the insured keeper of the car cannot identify the driver (except to the police). He is still the insurer of the car and is therefore responsible for any damage his car does to anyone else whoever is driving it.

If the police were called there will be a record of the incident. There has to be, even though no further action was taken. So push your insurer to push a claim against the insurer of the vehicle. And if, for some stupid reason, it declines to do so, initiate a County Court Small Claim against the insurer of the vehicle.
