Do Subaru Outback dual mass flywheels often disintegrate?

My two-year-old Subaru Outback diesel had a new clutch at 5000 miles. On two occasions thereafter it suffered from a temporary problem such that I had to drive for about 60 miles across Devon in third gear, but when checked by both a Devon dealer and my local dealer they weren't able to identify any specific problems. However, at its recent 24,000-mile, service the technician's report stated "clutch biting point too low", and after contacting Subaru UK the dealers took the car back in yesterday for warranty work. I had a phone call yesterday to say that the flywheel totally disintegrated during disassembly, so they are still waiting for parts. Needless to say this is very disappointing. This is my eighth Subaru in 30 years and I've never had anything other than complete reliability previously.

Fortunately, if "the flywheel totally disintegrated" this is totally a warranty claim with nothing for you to pay. It's not uncommon with dual mass flywheels.
