Lack of engine braking

I have a 63 reg new model Nissan Note diesel which doesn't slow down when you take your foot off the throttle, so approaching corners and bends I am braking to slow down ,I don't have the engine braking effect from a closed throttle. My dealer tells me this is a "characteristic" of the engine system and has demonstrated the same effect on a brand new car. Can this be correct ? Is it a fault on the engine control system,Can it be modified ? I'm sure I'm not the only complainant.

You don't say if this is the 1.2 or the 1.2 DIG-T. But all are low friction engines and what you are experiencing is this low friction that should translate to good mpg.
