Which has the better 1.4 engine - Audi A3 or Volkswagen Polo?

I currently drive a Volkswagen Polo 1.4 automatic and find it struggles for performance on the motorway. As a result, I would like to trade it in for something a bit more powerful.

I like the Audi A3 but not sure if a 1.4 would be more powerful than the 1.4 Polo or should I be looking at the 1.6? I'm also unsure whether to go for petrol or diesel, but have always driven petrol cars. What are your thoughts?

It will do, especially if it's the old 1.4 16v 85PS version. Not a good engine. The latest VAG 1.4TFSI 125 and 150 are excellent engines, especially the 150ACT. No shortage of power or torque. But saddled with VAG's DSG automatic (called S tronic in Audis).
