Replacement engine - can I swap a petrol for a diesel?

I'm looking for a replacement engine for my 2004 Ford C-Max 1.6 petrol. Can I fit a different engine (like a diesel) or must the replacement be the same as before?

The cost of the work involved to replace with a different engine from exactly what is in would far exceed the value of the vehicle. Trying to switch to a diesel engine would involve the fitting of so many components from a scrap diesel C-Max or Focus that it is economically unviable.
