Best small car for £5000?

Our 21 year old daughter's 2000 Ford KA is now due for upgrade. She's had it three years and now fancies something a little bigger. She uses her car every day for work but generally only does short journeys. The budget will be around £5000 and she likes the look of the three-door Vauxhall Astra although the Corsa is probably a better size (she's not tall).

She wants something with a smart, sporty type look but without the sporty costs. What other makes/models would you suggest we consider?

A Fiesta is a far better car than a Corsa. Drives better, handles better, is much more reliable and is more stylish.
