Buying a used car for £6k - what's best?

Please can you advise me on what car would best suit my needs?

I am a 24 year old female, I live a very outdoorsy life and I am looking for a hatchback that is still stylish but that I can fit one large and one small dog in the boot and/or large riding equipment in the back.

I do 16,000 miles per year in my 2002 Toyota Yaris, which is costing me around £50 per week in petrol. I need something that is going to be good on fuel, preferably not too expensive to insure and that is nice to drive. I travel 15 miles to and from the stables twice per day and even further to my boyfriend’s house, which is all country and motorway type roads.

I have been advised that a diesel is the best car to go for. My maximum spend is £6,000 and I would like a car that is from 2007 upwards (06 at a push). The car I am really interested in is a Honda Civic please could you advise on what you know about this car.

For £6000 you can get a fairly mileagy Honda CIvic 2.2iCTDI. No DPF to worry about on this car. But I reckon the Civic 1.8iES is a better buy because it can do 45mpg, has none of the problems of a diesel and you'll get a younger, less mileagy car for your £6000.
