The lack of console in the Honda CR-V makes exiting the car in a tight space much easier.

I have a 2008 Honda CR-V automatic petrol version and we are very happy indeed, generally. The car is not perfect (fuel consumption and high tax rate) but it has some excellent features, one of which is the crossover gear system, and also easy access for a disabled family member with good boot storage for wheelchair and other requirements. It also has a real spacesaver spare wheel and not a puncture repair kit. When we test drove the CR-V and other similar cars we had no idea how useful to us the lack of a console in front of the seats would be. From time to time we need to reverse the car onto a tight parking area and it is possible for the driver to move his/her feet through the empty console space and exit from the passenger door.

Honda abandoned consoles for the 2001 – 2003 Civic and CR-V automatic. Both had fully reclining seats that could be used as a double bed. The CR-V had a column mounted automatic shifter and, like its predecessor, was a true 'walk-through' car. You could walk between the front seats to the back. But, apparently, the public demanded consoles to put all their knick-knacks in, and the facelift Civic therefore came with a full-length console while the 2007 CR-V automatic acquired one between the seats. Proving, as usual, that the customer is always wrong.
