Why isn't money spent on road repairs rather than installing speed limit signs?

I wonder how many millions must have been spent on the countless number of 20mph signs now blighting roads in built up areas, many in little-used rural roads. From what I have seen this ridiculous limit is universally ignored by car, bus and truck drivers and I very much doubt that lives have been saved. Meanwhile road surfaces are rapidly deteriorating and local authorities seem unable to keep up with repairs. I cannot remember a time when roads were as bad as they are now. How much more sensible it would be if the money wasted on 20mph signs was used to fix the roads?

Could not agree more. I am daily besieged by some campaigner promoting this pestilence. They make sense on side roads. They do not make sense on through roads. In my area (Weybridge, Surrey), there are posh houses on through roads and these roads are restricted to 20mph. Yet the completely enclosed council estate with just two entrance roads still has a 30 limit. Make sense of that.
