Getting good fuel economy - petrol or diesel?

Do you think the likes of the Suzuki Swift 1.2 which claims to do 57mpg, makes diesels less appealing if doing 15-18 thousand miles a year?

The fact that it did 57mpg in the ECDC lab tests does not mean that it will do 57mpg in real life. But, happily, the real life average achieved by real people driving on real roads is 50.5mpg, which is very good and does beat some diesels: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/suzuki/swift-2010
