Buying a luxury car for £8k?

I am 80 years old and run a small runabout for local shopping. I would like to buy an executive car to replace my car and use for longer trips to visit family. I have £5000-8000 to spend and want an automatic, what do you recommend?

Not a very economical proposition because in between those six 250 mile runs each year the car will deteriorate badly. If you buy something that was expensive new, say £40,000, then your running costs will be those of a £40,000 car, not a £5000 - £8000 car.

Better to look at a fairly basic Ford Mondeo 2.0i automatic, preferably on 16-inch wheels with 205/60 R16 tyres for the most comfortable ride.
