Which car is best for disabled passenger?

I own a BMW 118D, but following my wife’s stroke I find the car is no longer suitable for our needs. What we now want a car with easy access and a much softer ride. A friend has a Suzuki Grand Vitara and the seat entrance and exit is absolutely fine for my wife, but do I really need to buy a 4x4 just to get higher seats?

If you must have diesel a Mazda 5 1.6d TS2 on 205/55 R16 Toyo J48 tyres. Brilliant. Prefer petrol, then the same car with the 2.0i 150PS petrol engine.
