Want an economical family car, low tax and insurance but with a nice solid build and engine

I currently have an 04 Toyota Corolla auto (had it 4 months) but worry it's hard on petrol and don't like the loss of control with an auto. I would like to buy something a five-door hatch that's economical, solidly build, safe, with a decent engine with a bit of oomph. Budget £2,500 - £3,000 which includes getting £2000 for the Corolla.
