Automatic pick up truck for towing caravan?

HJ advised me to get a D-Max rather than an Amarok to tow caravan: good advice, delighted with it. Now my mate wants a pick up to tow a big twin axle caravan but he wants an automatic gearbox. Is D-Max better than the Volkswagen in auto guise?
