Why has my car insurance premium suddenly increased?

My reputable insurance company recently increased my premium by 11 per cent, without explanation, to £744 with a £350 excess. I have a clean licence and 60 per cent NCD so I approached an equally reputable insurer and was quoted £379 with a £250 excess. Needless to say I have made the change, but what on earth is going on?

They were not as “highly reputable” as you thought. Brokers are grabbing increased commission and, instead of settling for 10 per cent, they are snatching whatever they can. Most price comparison sites are actually brokers.
