We only need one car - should we keep the BMW 320i or the Toyota Yaris?

My 2001 BMW 320i is a joy to drive and has only done 56,000 miles. It is used mainly for longer runs and can return almost 40mpg. My wife's car is a 2003 Yaris and is used as a runabout and was, until recently, used by our son for commuting to work. It has done 66,000 miles.

We now only need one vehicle and I don't know if it makes sense to keep one of our present cars or sell them both to get something else. If so, what would you suggest? Would it be sensible to run both of these cars until they drop?

It depends how inconvenient it will be to go down to one car. Keep a logbook for a couple of weeks of the times you each use your cars to assess this. Neither car is worth much. The Yaris is about the most reliable small car of its age (my mother has a Y-reg which recently sailed through its ninth MoT). The BMW could start to cost money and, when it does, that's the time to let it go.
