Low profile tyres - can I replace them for something higher?

The 17-inch rims and 225/45 tyres on my Skoda Superb are giving me a hard ride. A tyre fitter has suggested replacing the tyres, when worn - soon, apparently - with 225/50 tyres on the same 17" wheels.

Will alter the speed reading. The speedo will under read. Better to switch to 16" wheels and 205/55 R16 tyres.
