Fuel efficiency by time of year

I now have a Kia Cee'd Ecodynamics 2011 but despite economical driving (e.g. 50-55mph on motorways, smooth braking etc) it's only getting about 49MPG. With all the cold weather we're currently having I wondered whether cars in general varied in efficiency depending on weather, or maybe the age of the car? And does the weather effect diesels more than petrols? I would be interested in your thoughts.

Yes, colder weather does adversely affect economy. You should be doing better. we got over 50mpg long distance from the bigger Optima 1.7 diesel, and I'm averaging a genuine 65mpg from a BMW 320dED usually locked into 70mph cruise on motorways. Try changing your fuel. I do best on Shell Fuelsave and V-Power diesel.
