Can I use a trickle charger without disconnecting the battery

My Porsche 944 S2 Driver's Manual states: "Prior to charging the battery with a 'Quick Charger', disconnect the battery to prevent destruction of the alternator". As I only use the car infrequently, is it OK to connect up a trickle charger i.e. the type one can connect via the cigar lighter?

You can use a "battery conditioning trickle charger" but connect it to the battery terminals. Do not attempt to charge via the cigar lighter or accessory socket.
