Which tyre size for an X1?

A friend is buying a BMW X1, due for delivery in October. I asked him if he knew which profile tyres he was getting and he though that it would have 18 inch wheels. The spec says 17 or 18 inch wheels. He knows nothing about tyres and is unfortunately not a reader of your column. He was amazed to learn that there are high and low profile and did not know about winter tyres, either. He lives in the New Forest, on the forest side of cattle grids. What advice can you give re the correct type of tyres that he should have supplied with this brand new car?
