Poor fuel economy in my 2002 Fiesta Diesel

I commute to London 3 times a week and it's a 220 mile round trip, 90% of my trip is on motorways and I never go above 70mph. Now I know my car isn't new but I cant get over 40mpg. Is this acceptable for a car of this age or is there something wrong with the engine?

Something wrong. Obviously the first thing to change is the air filter.
