Gearbox oil leak just out of warranty

I bought a July 2009 registered Fiesta from a private seller 1.5 months back. Since yesterday it has developed a big oil leak from the gearbox. Local garage says its an internal leak which needs the gearbox stripped opened to be diagnosed (quote £200-£300 range). Called nearest authorized dealer and they quote roughly £1000 (including VAT) for the diagnosis.

The car has done just 7k miles and is just 2 month over the 3 year manufacturer warranty. Tried to call Ford customer service asking them to cover the cost and they are non-committal.

Do you have suggestions on how to get Ford to get more co-operative on doing this as goodwill given the car is not driven much for such a fault to occur?

All you can do is try and get the Ford dealer to submit the claim for you on a goodwill basis. What you get will depend on the service record of the car. All Ford services and all on time you should get something. Independernt services, not on time, you won't get anything.
