Buying a car with a fault from a private seller?

I read somewhere that any vehicle seller, whether private or trade, is not allowed to sell a vehicle that is unroadworthy and that if a fault develops within 6 months it is presumed that it was there at the point of sale.

I bought a 1.1 Saxo and in 6 weeks the engine had seized. I drove it for the first couple of weeks until the tax ran out,I noticed that the engine management light was on as we drove it away once purchased, but didn't notice it before when we test drove it a week earlier. I took it to a garage for diagnosis, I was told it was the cat, but that was replaced last year for the MOT, the girl I bought it from said the light had been on for about 2 years.

I started the car 2 weeks later to move it on my drive, then 2 weeks after that I went to do the same again and found that the engine had seized. I am also not sure if one of the tyres is actually legal. I have only just found out how to check tyres. I assumed because I knew the seller that everything would be ok. Is there anything I can do to get my money back?

The 6 months ruling only refers to dealers. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ But it is illegal for a private individual to sell as roadworthy a car that is not. A seized engine does not make it unroadworthy. It merely means that the car will not run and you have no redress about it against a private vendor.
