Buying new mid range saloon

In the autumn I will be changing my eight year old VW Passat TDI 130 and as I do an average of 8,000 miles per annum, including a lot of local runs and the occasional sortie abroad, I intend to revert to a petrol engine.

Top of my list (followed by, Passat, Avensis and Peugot 508) is the Jetta 1.4 litre TSI 160PS. However I was concerned by your response to BW of Skipton's letter particularly the problem with the Golf 1.4.TSI engines after six years.

As, I believe, the Jetta uses the same engines as the Golf will this affect my proposed purchase or are the engines in the latest (2011) Jettas now more refined? What alternatives would you advocate; I am looking for comfort, quietness and large boot capacity in a mid range saloon as described.

Same engine. Could be that the problems are historical, but while VAG admits nothing we don't know. The Astra and Meriva can be had with a very nice 140PS chain cam turbo petrol; the Megane with a 130PS 1.4 turbo petrol or a 115PS 1.2 turbo petrol (both chain cam), the Focus with a 150 OR 180PS turbo petrol also found in Volvo V50s.
