Getting deeper profile tyres for a V50?

The ride on my 56 plate Volvo V50 is both hard and noisy. I would like to replace the low profile tyres currently fitted with normal tyres. Is this possible and if so which tyres would be best suited to answer both problems?

You will have to switch to a smaller 15" or 16" wheel size and tyres that have the same circumference as your existing tyres but deeper sidewalls between the rims and the road.
