BMW 1 Series won't start

My 1 Series engine fires but then resorts to a chugging sound and does not fire up properly. No computer data problems on dash board, fuel all good.

Car was towed back to our garage and the mechanic's stumped. Lots of codes on investigation but BMW won't divulge code explanations, so mechanic is going to remove fuel pumps for process of elimination. What's the likely problem?

Possible fuel tank lifter pump. Might be failed pump, but hope it's just a bad earth to the pump or to the pump relay.
