Insurance write off

I have been advised that my car (Skoda Octavia) may be written off by the insurance company due to the age of the car (10 years old) and mileage (142000). It has a severely damaged wing which includes the lights and also a damaged sill.

We were not planning to change the car until the middle of next year (due to finances) so would prefer to get it back and change it next year.

I have a couple of questions on this I would appreciate some advice on what to do.

1) If the car is on the borderline of being economical to repair could we ask the insurance company to get it fixed rather that write it off?

2) If it is not worth getting back and repairing can I haggle on the amount I get from the insurance company? I had just filled up with diesel and it had got good tyres on it (4 Bridgestone A001's, not cheap) and it has also got a towbar that I would need on a new car and a CD changer.

You can ask the insurance company not to write it off and tell them you want to keep it at whatever settlement figure they are prepared to give you.
